    Board President Remarks

    • Over the weekend, several Board members and I had the opportunity to serve as judges for the Ladue Novice Invitational Speech and Debate Competition. If you have the opportunity to see these students compete, it is confirmation of the brilliance of our young people from across the state.

    • The SSD Leadership Council met this past week for its inaugural meeting. This is a product of the SSD Public Review Committee, on which I’ve served, and it includes representation from the SSD Board of Education, Governing Council, and SSD Parent Advisory Council.

    • I also took part in the Nov. 15 One Book One Community event. We discussed Disability Visibility by Alice Wong; the event featured a great panel of speakers who live with a disability and/or are advocates for others with disabilities. The panel included recent LHWHS alumni Annie Donnell and BeLov’ed Brooks, parents Joya Brooks and Rachel Katzman, SSD Director for Ladue Schools Dr. Catina Lyles, and Marquita Warner from the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation. This is a very important topic for our district as it relates to our DEI goals. When we talk about DEI, the conversation often stops after race, but the plight of differently-abled students fits appropriately with this topic. I’d like to thank Dr. Jennifer Riesenmy, Laila Crabtree, Melody Frese, and Kimberly McKenzie for continuing to lift our consciousness with these community events that provide a seat at the table for anyone within our community.

    • Spoede’s Open House was attended by more than 500 people including former teachers, administrators, and students, along with some prospective families.

    • Deluxe Magazine will host the Power 100 Gala on Dec. 18, where LECC Director Dr. Stacy Carlock and I will be honored. This event recognizes 100 individuals who break barriers and raise the bar in their respective fields.

    • Board filing opens Dec. 6 at 8 a.m. There will be three open seats as the three-year terms of incumbents Andy Bresler, Carolyn Jaeger, and I will be up for re-election. Currently, I will be the only returning member seeking re-election. If any member of the community is interested in running for a seat, please contact Fern Wagstaff at (314) 983-5302.

    • Tonight’s presentations concerning proposed new start times and LECC expansion will be information items; both have received increased input from the community. Please note that we have received your emails and phone calls and take all of your thoughts into consideration as we process the option of changes to our current structure. All who have submitted a comment card will have the opportunity to speak, but no vote will be held on these issues tonight. The Board hears information items during one meeting and will not have an official vote on any item until a subsequent meeting. I would also like to remind our community that a Board of Education meeting is an opportunity for the Board to hold its meetings in public.

    • Congratulations to Kisha Lee and Dr. Carlock on their upcoming recognition at the Deluxe Power 100 Gala.

    • I want to recognize LHWHS Principal Brad Griffith – we celebrated our National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists tonight and I appreciate that you mentioned the last three years, as we’ve had a total of 76 Semifinalists in that time. The key to me there is longevity, and it’s quite an accomplishment that we have the most Semifinalists in that span of any public or private school in Missouri. It speaks to the leadership, tradition, and focus on academics at LHWHS.

    • How great was it to also recognize our girls’ tennis team? The common thread between these two groups is the great students that are earning these achievements.

    • Last week was American Education Week, a week during which we celebrated our three Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award recipients: Mark Biernbaum, Katie Reeves, and Ellie White. Katie and Ellie work for us through SSD. You can’t teach without passion and I think it’s safe to say that all of our award winners, and all of our teachers here in LAdue Schools, have tremendous passion. Our teachers know that they are responsible for making sure our students receive the best education possible. We are fortunate to have wonderful teachers and educators in our district.

    • As we reflect on the year and express gratitude, I’m grateful to serve this community and district as superintendent, I’m grateful to our staff and students who work so hard every day, and I’m grateful to our parents and community for entrusting us with making sure the future is well-prepared. Finally, I’m incredibly grateful to each one of our Board members for their volunteer hours of service. Each of you spends hours upon hours working to make this a better district for our children.

    • I wish each and every one of you a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving with family and loved ones.

    Board Advisory Committee Update

    The Board received four qualified applications for the newly created Legislative Board Advisory Committee and approved all four applicants.

    S.M. Wilson Presentation #17, Change Order Requests, and Pay Application

    Representatives from SM Wilson provided an update on Prop L construction, along with the latest change order requests and pay application. The Board approved all items as presented.

    Wachter Presentation and Pay Application

    Representatives from Wachter, Inc. provided an update on construction at Reed and Conway and the latest pay application. The Board approved both items as presented.

    Dr. Wipke and the Board reviewed district goals for the current school year.

    Early Childhood Presentation

    LECC Director Dr. Stacy Carlock provided an update on Phase I of Early Childhood expansion.

    Dr. Geoff Macy provided information related to current LECC and BASK tuition.

    Auditor’s Report

    Dr. Macy provided updates and a timeline related to the district’s annual audit.

    2023-24 LECC Salary Schedule

    Dr. Julie Helm reviewed recommended changes to the salary schedule for LECC teachers.

    2023-24 Support Staff Salary Schedule

    Dr. Helm also reviewed recommended changes to the salary schedule for district support staff.

    2023-24 Middle School New Courses

    Dr. Amy Zielinski reviewed course change proposals for the 2023-24 school year at LMS. This includes the addition of one new course and a name change for another course.

    2023-24 Start Times

    Dr. Zielinski gave a presentation containing student, staff, and community feedback surrounding proposed changes to start times next school year.

    Board President Remarks

    • Several members of the Board and district administration took part in the MSBA annual conference in Kansas City over the weekend. Board members Carolyn Jaeger and Andy Bresler, along with Dr. Geoff Macy and Dr. Jim Wipke, presented “Going Beyond Budgets for Student Success,” during which they shared our cash flow model. Those in attendance were very impressed and engaged me in conversation about the presentation throughout the rest of the weekend when they found out I was from Ladue. Well done to the whole team. Our very own Board Secretary Fern Wagstaff presented at a pre-conference panel discussion titled, “Who is your boss?” I heard plenty of kudos from our colleagues from around the state about Fern. Overall, the conference was a success. We heard from dynamic speakers including a parent whose daughter lost their life in the Sandy Hook tragedy and a former principal of Columbine High School, as they discussed school safety. We heard from Dr. Bernard Harris, a former NASA astronaut, who shared his experiences from numerous flights and space walks. He emphasized the importance of STEAM education in all schools across the country, including DOD (Department of Defense) schools, which I attended while living on military installations. The quote he left us with was, “I am an infinite being with infinite possibilities.” Finally, the conference ended with Jackee Joyner-Kersee – it was amazing to see someone who you’ve admired for so long but never heard speak so intimately. She left us with a few quotes as well: “The support has to match the challenge,”, “Know your why; those that know why will always be those that know how,”, “Know what it takes to get on the podium,”, “Remain coachable,”, and finally, she reminded us to give back to our students with hope, guidance, and light.

    Superintendent Remarks

    • October has come and gone and so has the first quarter of the school year. It’s been a wonderful first quarter and second quarter is off to a great start.

    • I want to thank our Board – in particular, Andy, Carolyn, Kisha, Jennifer, and Marissa – for attending the MSBA conference in Kansas City. I believe we all learned a lot and it was an enjoyable experience. I was also impressed with Carolyn, Andy, and Geoff’s presentation as they had 37 attendees. It was titled, “Going Beyond Budgets for Student Success” and they did an outstanding job.

    • We continue to move forward on some major initiatives, including finalizing decision on expansion of our early childhood program to make it more accessible to our students. We continue to look at ways to offer additional after-school programming for middle school students next year. The more we can get students involved in activities after school, the more academics will follow. We continue to offer leadership opportunities at our high school, including a leadership breakfast on Wednesday. Dr. Derrick Wallace has a few new community education proposals he is working on as well.

    • I’m also excited about the data overview that will be given tonight. Over the past three years, we have brought in more educational support in the form of instructional coaches and additional teaching assistants, so that they along with our talented teachers can dive deeper into ensuring all students find success. As I walk through schools, including Old Bonhomme today, it’s common to see students receiving additional support in small breakout rooms. It’s also common to see students receiving acceleration opportunities, like today when I saw students walk down to a construction site of a home and were able to talk directly with the builder.

    • Tomorrow is November 8 and it is a professional development day in our district so students will not be in attendance, but I can assure you a lot of learning will take place with our staff and teachers.

    • (Comments made just prior to the meeting) We want to send our thoughts and prayers to all St. Louis Public Schools teachers and staff and the entire community. Please join me in a moment of silence. We are all deeply saddened by the devastating news, therefore, as stated in Dr. Wipke’s letter earlier today, we are here for our students and staff. We also have resources available on our website to assist you.

    • (Regular remarks) I would like to wish the Hindu community a happy Diwali.

    • Last week we hosted our Legislative Board Advisory Committee Breakfast. It was a great opportunity to hear from our local legislators. All were invited as this is a non-partisan committee and we are here to focus solely on the topic of public education and issues that may impact what we do here.

    Superintendent Remarks

    • I think we all have heavy hearts given the tragedy that happened earlier today at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School. I want to thank President Lee for summing up the situation well, but to reiterate, our thoughts are with the families who were affected by today’s tragedy. We will continue to keep our friends and family members at CVPA in our thoughts and prayers.

    • Congratulations to our girls’ tennis team for winning the state championship. The school held a parade for them as they walked around the building with the band playing for them. There were many happy, smiling faces as they are proud of their achievement, and we certainly are, too.

    System Design Zone Resolution

    The Board approved a resolution which authorizes the district’s membership in the System Design Zone, a collaborative initiative where leading Missouri public school districts and charter schools work together to grow in their understanding and application of using a competency-based mindset to personalize learning to ensure every student has the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to be high school-, college-, career-, and workplace-ready.

    Dr. Geoff Macy shared updated numbers regarding the 2021-22 budget which will the administration and Board can analyze in order to make informed decisions for the current budget as well as future budgets.

    Board President Remarks

    • Andy Bresler, Marissa Rosen, and I participated in a panel discussion with doctoral candidates at Saint Louis University on Saturday. It was provided by Dr. Donna Jahnke. It was an opportunity to share more about our experiences on the Board of Education.

    • I want to also mention that I met with The Village, formerly CURE, and it was an awesome opportunity to meet with students and parents who are of African American descent or have African American students. The room was full and it was great to see so many people out in support of the district’s diversity efforts.

     

    Superintendent Remarks

    • Although we just had our last Board meeting on Sept. 29, a lot has happened in our schools since then. We had the Mile Run at Conway on Sept. 30. We also had the KSDK pep rally at our high school this past Friday, which started at 5:45 in the morning. I would guess we had about 150 students there who came to support the team.

    • I want to give a shoutout to our girls’ softball team which won the conference championship.

    • The LEF ‘Due Run took place on Saturday and welcomed almost 500 participants; I had a lot of fun at the event.

    • We held our first Parent District Council meeting along with our first meeting of The Village this year. We continue to receive valuable feedback from our parents in regard to start and end times and potential changes for next year. We will offer a virtual parent forum on Wednesday to allow for even more parent feedback.

    • Be on the lookout in the future for more information about community tours of our Prop L projects. In particular, tours of Spoede will be offered Nov. 10.

    • Our Legislative Board Advisory Committee will meet for the first time on Oct. 19. You can find more information about that on our district website.

    Board President Remarks

    • I want to thank Carolyn Jaeger for hosting an open house for the Board and district administrators at her home last week.
    • The Special School District Governing Council held its first meeting on Monday, Sept. 19. The meeting included the first of many interactions between the Governing Council and the SSD Board of Education.
    • I plan to attend the St. Louis American Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education Gala this Saturday where our own Leah Crawford will be recognized.

    • Congratulations to all of the high school’s newest Distinguished Alumni. The newest 29 honorees were inducted on Thursday, Sept. 22 in a wonderful ceremony. On Sept. 23, our high school students had the opportunity to attend learning sessions hosted by our Distinguished Alumni during which they talked about their careers. In particular, I’d like to thank Julie Ferrie of the LEF, Liz Little, president of the Alumni Council, and LHWHS Activities Coordinator Greg Kendall for all of their efforts in putting this event together.
    • Of the hundreds of high schools in Missouri, LHWHS is one of only 78 to receive the College Success Award from greaterschools.org. Also, Niche.com ranked LHWHS the #1 public high school in Missouri in its new 2023 rankings. It also was named the best public high school for college prep. Despite all of the challenges in recent years, our high school and all of our other schools have done a phenomenal job in upholding best practices to support students.
    • On Tuesday, Sept. 20, I had the opportunity to attend LMS’ 6th grade camp. I want to thank our staff, including lead organizer Mark Biernbaum, for helping to make this such a success. I saw team-building, fishing, cooking, building, spelunking, along with countless smiles and high-fives.
    • I want to congratulate Leah Crawford for being named a St. Louis American Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education honoree.

    Board President Remarks

    • The district’s Diversity Committee held its first meeting last Thursday; Marissa Rosen and I were there for the kickoff.

    • We have added Board liaison committee reports to our agenda, so each Board member will have an opportunity to give a report.

    • The SSD Governing Council, which I also chair, will meet next Monday on Zoom to present the final report of the Public Review Committee to the full body of the council, which includes representatives from SSD’s 22 local partner districts.

    • The SSD Parent Advisory Council will host a Family Engagement Night on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the SSD central office, 12110 Clayton Road.

    Superintendent Remarks

    • It has been a successful first three weeks of school. I’m proud to report that students and staff in all of our schools are thriving.

    • Many of our schools are gathering baseline data from our universal assessments; this data is incredibly important for planning and preparing differentiating lessons, focusing on where each student stands individually in real-time.

    • Professional development is an everyday occurrence in our district, but Dr. Amy Zielinski has done a great job of pulling in outside resources that serve individual school needs as well. Data from our Panorama survey has assisted the C&I team. Very soon, we will begin our regularly scheduled data team meetings with school leadership and district data teams to analyze areas of improvement. This is all in alignment with this year’s district goals.

    • I often mention Prop L in these updates, but I haven’t talked about how we are preparing to use the new spaces to enhance lessons and improve learning. Dr. Zielinski and I have met with our architects and are scheduling meetings with other districts to discuss how they are using similar spaces. Dr. Zielinski and our instructional coaches plan to provide professional development after teachers have moved into their new spaces; it will be an ongoing learning process. I’ve already seen how these new spaces can impact learning at Old Bonhomme.

    • Last Thursday, we held a professional development session for our school counselors, SEB team, educational support counselors, and building principals.

    • Speaking of professional development, I met with our principals last week for a session based on the book “Think Again” by Adam Grant. I am always impressed when I get to work with our principals so we can learn from each other.

    Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) III

    Dr. Geoff Macy presented the district’s Safe Return to Learn Continuity of Services Plan 2022-23 as required by ESSER III. The Board approved the plan.

    Return to School Mitigation Measures

    Dr. Wipke and District Lead Nurse Ann Body presented the Mitigating Measures Plan 2022-23. The Board approved the plan.

    • As liaison to Ladue Middle School, I took part in welcoming staff back to the building with a “Survivor” flair. With me was Natasha Fox, a friend and former contestant on two seasons of Survivor. The LMS team, led by Dr. Angela Thompson, is off to a great start while accommodating the vast construction projects going on at the school. The Fifth Grade Center also held a Survivor-themed welcome back event for staff.

    • I had the pleasure of touring our buildings with Dr. Wipke earlier this month and saw many of our staff getting their rooms ready for the first day of school. It’s always amazing to see the transformation in the rooms by the time school begins.

    • We have once again added the Liaison Committee reports back to our agenda. This allows the board members to provide updates on their assigned schools and any updates from the individual committees that we serve.

    • Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of serving as a docent for the Class of 1982 on their tour of the high school. This was my second time leading the tour and it gets better each time. It’s always great to see classmates catch up with one another after so many years away. I learned about the Ladue Gun Club on the tour and was able to find a mention of it on the new timeline. Speaking of the timeline, kudos to Carolyn Jaeger, Jeff Kopolow, Ladue alumni, the Communications Department, high school administration, and many others who contributed to this fascinating addition to our high school.

    • The SSD Parent Advisory Council will host a Family Engagement Night on Sept. 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the SSD Central Office.

    Superintendent Remarks

    • We have had a fabulous start to our school year; we are all so happy and filled with joy to have our students walking our hallways again.

    • Last week I spent a lot of time on bus duty and parking lot patrol. Yes, we had some late buses and re-routing to handle, but kids were smiling at each school I visited. I rode bus L7 on the first day of school with bus driver Ms. Sarah. That was an adventure, to say the least. Thank you to all of our bus drivers for the job they do.

    • I want to highlight our Old Bonhomme teaching staff for their patience as they currently use a commuter shuttle to get to school each morning. They are awaiting the completion of the staff parking lot which should happen by the end of this week. We can learn a lot from our Old Bonhomme teachers for their positivity and understanding of the situation. Director of Facilities Mike Noonan volunteers to drive the shuttle in the morning; thank you, Mike.

    • I want to highlight the work of Dr. Geoff Macy who oversees our transportation vendor and works closely with our bus depot. He handles the questions and suggestions from our community on how to improve our bus routes. Thank you, Geoff, for all the extra time and energy you put into this responsibility.

    • Our Prop L work continues as crews work to get new sections of our buildings ready. We have heard a lot of positive comments from Old Bonhomme students about the new 3rd- and 4th-grade wing, as well as the renovated sections of the 2nd-grade wing. The renovated sections at LMS have also received high praise from students. It’s so much fun to see their faces when they walk into a new facility.

    • Our day custodial staff and ABBCO evening custodial staff should be commended for their extra efforts in getting our buildings prepared for students.

    • Congratulations to Instructional Coach Leah Crawford, who will soon be honored by the St. Louis American Foundation.

    • I want to recognize Director of Communications Kimberly McKenzie for taking over the timeline project after it had started, then it stalled out with COVID, but now that it is complete and on display in our high school it is remarkable to see.

    • Our teachers are doing amazing things each day. The amount of time they’ve spent getting their rooms ready is evident when you walk through the hallways. I really enjoyed our Meet the Teacher events as well. It has been an outstanding start to the year; I can’t thank our teachers and staff enough, along with our Board of Education for all of its support.

    Representatives from S.M. Wilson provided an update on Prop L construction progress along with information about the most recent change order requests and the July pay application. The Board approved all items.

    Wachter Change Orders and Pay Application

    Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance Dr. Geoff Macy recommended approval of change orders 4, 5, and 6 and the latest pay application from Wachter and Hoener. The Board approved both items.

    Board Policy Updates

    Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Dr. Julie Helm and Director of Student Services Dr. Derrick Wallace recommended approval of updates to board policies GCBDA, GDBDA, IGD, JHDE, and JGA. The Board approved the updates.

    Board Advisory Committee Updates

    Director of Facilities Mike Noonan provided information on two prospective appointees to the Facilities Board Advisory Committee. The Board approved the appointments.

    Superintendent Remarks

    • Congratulations to Dr. Amy Zielinski and the Curriculum and Instruction Department for coordinating New Teacher Orientation and doing a wonderful job leading our 23 new teachers.

    • Monday was the first day of regular season athletic practices. I know our high school athletic department has had a busy day. I love seeing kids practicing behind our Admin Center and getting back into action.

    • Our theme for the year is bringing joy to education and it’s something we’ve discussed in meetings and at Summer Institute. We have a lot to be thankful for here in Ladue Schools and we want to spread that joy.

    • As we look ahead to the beginning of the school year, we may have some challenges related to Prop L and making sure the work is done on time to welcome our students back to our buildings. We have received a lot of rain recently and it has impacted our families and construction projects. The staff parking lot at Old Bonhomme received substantial rain which has put us behind by 2 to 4 weeks, so some additional work will be needed there. There also is some drywall damage in the building that has slowed progress along with damage behind the school. We’re asking our staff and community to be patient with us as we work through these issues.

    • Our Middle School is coming along well, but there is plenty yet to be done. Everyone is working well together to get the job done.

    • My report would not be complete if I didn’t brag about my buddy Drew from Old Bonhomme. He recently sold lemonade in his driveway to raise money for the Humane Society and ended up donating everything he earned which amounted to $15. You may be seeing more of Drew in an upcoming back-to-school video. We are excited to welcome our staff back on the 15th and our students on the 22nd.

    Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Amy Zielinski and LHWHS Associate Principal Dr. Beth Rapoff recommended approval of the Ladue Opportunities program. The Board approved the program.
